Why NY? #3 – Tautahi Subritzky

words and photograph by Rachel Stickley

How long have you been sticking it out in NYC? I’ve been chilling out in New York since 10.10.10.

What brought you here? I really wish my answer was the money and the bitches, but really, it was the art and the culture.

What makes you stay? or if N/A why are you leaving? I love New York because no one gives a f***. You can be whoever you want to be, and do whatever you want to do, and no one bats an eyelid. You can walk around wearing a sequined turban and your face painted blue, dripping in diamantes hanging from your privates. Ain’t no thang.

What has been your greatest experience here? Meeting Beyonce.

What has been you most unexpected moment? Walking from Chelsea to the East Village after drinking Bacardi and Snapple in Central Park, meeting a guy on the side of the road who invited us up to a party which ended up being at Haley Joel Osment’s house. Completely unexpected. We ate falafel.

What has been your strangest or worst time in NYC? Hard to choose. Getting kicked in the face while walking home, Being punched by a girl on my birthday, and all the public urination. Oh and the fact that New York on a hot day often smells like ass mixed with gasoline.

If you could some how bring one thing about NZ to NYC, what would it be? The non-ass smelling air.

If you could share one part of NYC with NZ what would that be and why? The energy and momentum that people have. You can feel it as soon as you arrive. I think Auckland would be a whole lot more exciting if people were doing shit as quickly and a passionately as people seem to be doing it here.

How did you to spend your Memorial Day? At work, hungover from the last few nights before Memorial day. A fourty ounce of Colt 45 is a party. Two of them, are a drunken roll around on the bathroom floor. Fact.

Where do you live and and what is your favorite thing about the neighborhood? Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, Also known by the slogan ‘Bed-Stuy, Do or die’. It’s the hood that made Jay Z, Notorious B.I.G, Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Lil Kim. It’s not really the kinda place you have a favourite thing about. The cheap cigarettes illegally smuggled from Mexico?

How much pizza do you eat in NYC per week on average? Um .01? Staying model thin, you have to make some sacrifices.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? New York is still, and always will be, my first choice. Melbourne, Australia is the default.
